Nguyen Hue Walking Street

Nguyen Hue Walking Street offers a broad pedestrian boulevard. It sits on Nguyễn Huệ in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. This street connects the Ho Chi Minh City Hall and the Saigon River. It opened as a pedestrian-only space in April 2015. The boulevard measures about 670 meters long. It is also 64 meters wide. It occupies the site of a former waterway. Locals called it the Charner Canal. The French colonial administration filled the canal in 1887. This created a grand thoroughfare.

The street provides a central public square for the city. It hosts cultural events and public celebrations. Street performances also take place here. A large Ho Chi Minh statue stands near City Hall. Commercial buildings, hotels, and shops flank the boulevard. Notable landmarks include the Rex Hotel. Visitors also see the historic Cafe Apartment building at 42 Nguyen Hue. This former residential block now holds many independent cafes and boutiques.

During the Lunar New Year, the boulevard becomes Nguyen Hue Flower Street. This annual tradition dates back to 2004. It features elaborate floral displays and themed installations. Fountains and public seating equip the street. It functions as a popular gathering place for residents. It also offers a starting point for visitors. The city closes the entire street to vehicle traffic on weekend evenings.

The boulevard’s design provides an open, landscaped space. It sits in the city’s dense urban core. It links several historic and commercial attractions. The Saigon Opera House is a short walk away. Đồng Khởi Street is also nearby. At its southern end, the street opens to Bạch Đằng Wharf. This offers waterfront views on the Saigon River.
