Overview

Tao Đàn Park is a public park on Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai street in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. The park covers ten hectares of green space behind the Reunification Palace. It contains over 1,000 mature trees, providing extensive shade. Residents use the park for daily activities like tai chi, badminton, and jogging. Paved pathways cross the lawns and gardens, connecting different areas of the park.

The grounds feature several historical and cultural structures. The Hung Kings Memorial Temple stands within the park. This temple honors the legendary founders of the Vietnamese nation. A small replica of a Cham tower is also present. The park contains a cluster of tombs dating to 1895. These graves belong to historical figures Mr. Lam Tam Lang and Mrs. Mai Thi Xa. A dedicated children’s playground offers slides, swings, and other equipment.

A specific area of the park functions as a bird cafe. Local bird owners gather here in the early mornings. They hang cages with songbirds from tree branches and hooks. This tradition dates back to the mid-1950s. The park also hosts the city’s annual Spring Flower Festival during the Tet holiday. This event gathers bonsai artists and gardeners from across the region to display their work.

The park’s history began as the garden of the French Governor’s Palace. The French administration separated the land in 1869, creating a public garden called Jardin de la Ville. It received its current name, Tao Đàn, after 1954. After 1975, authorities designated it the Tao Đàn Cultural Park. The park is bounded by four major streets: Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai, Huyen Tran Cong Chua, Nguyen Du, and Cach Mang Thang Tam.

History

5 Things You Didn't Know About Tao Đàn Park

From “Vườn Ông Thượng” to the city’s first public park

Tao Đàn began as the private pleasure garden of Governor Lê Văn Duyệt in the early 19th century, known to locals as “Vườn Ông Thượng,” where he relaxed and watched performances that later evolved into cải lương.
After the French captured Gia Định citadel in 1859, they separated the garden from the palace with a new street (today’s Huyền Trân Công Chúa) and turned it into the Jardin de la Ville, later renamed Parc Maurice Long for colonial officials and elites.

“Bo Ro” – the garden of elegant games

Vietnamese residents nicknamed the park “Bo Ro,” likely from the French “beaux jeux” (elegant games), because it hosted early sports facilities like tennis courts, a football pitch and a swimming pool between 1896 and 1926.
This made Tao Đàn one of Saigon’s first modern leisure spaces where locals could watch and play organised sports under colonial rule.

A green lung with political echoes

After 1954 the garden was renamed Tao Đàn and became a major public park; by the 1970s, with thousands of trees, Saigon people called it the city’s “green lung.”
During the war years it also served as a gathering point for demonstrations and public events, so its lawns witnessed both picnics and protests that shaped southern urban life.

A temple to the Hùng Kings inside a colonial park

In 1992 a temple to the Hùng Kings was built inside the park and later restored in 2011, turning this former governor’s garden into a place where Saigonese now gather every Tết to honor Vietnam’s legendary founders.
It is unusual to find a national‑mythology temple embedded in what was once a French colonial leisure space, layering old Vietnamese identity over a European‑style urban park.

From royal garden to everyday Saigon life

Over more than two centuries Tao Đàn has shifted from a governor’s private retreat to a colonial elite park, then to a mass public space where families exercise, children fly kites and old men play chess under the same trees that once shaded French officials.
That continuity makes it one of the few places in central Saigon where you can literally walk through three centuries of urban history in a single afternoon.
