Ho Chi Minh City Opera House

The Ho Chi Minh City Opera House sits on Lam Son Square. This French colonial-era municipal theatre is in District 1. Locals call it the Municipal Theatre of Ho Chi Minh City. The building hosts opera, ballet, and classical music performances. Construction began in 1898. French architect Eugène Ferret designed the theatre. It opened to the public on January 1, 1900. Its architectural style reflects the French Third Republic’s Flamboyant Gothic.

The building’s facade draws inspiration from the Petit Palais in Paris. It showcases stone-carved statues and ornate reliefs. A grand arched entrance welcomes visitors. The original design seated about 500 guests. Workers imported all decorative materials from France. This included granite floors, crystal chandeliers, and stone statues. The structure stands on an elevated platform. This design isolates the auditorium from street noise. In 1998, the city government completed a major restoration. This preserved the original French architectural style.

The building has served many functions over time. From 1955 to 1975, it housed the Lower House. This was the National Assembly of the Republic of Vietnam. After 1975, it returned to its original purpose. It once again became a performing arts venue. The theatre received National Relic status in 2012. Today, it hosts performances by the HCMC Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera. It also stages contemporary cultural shows. The A O Show is a popular example.

The Opera House is a major city center landmark. It stands near other historic colonial buildings. The Central Post Office and Notre Dame Cathedral are nearby. The interior generally limits access to performance patrons. However, the building’s exterior remains popular for photography and sightseeing. The box office sets its own daily schedule for ticket sales.
