Nguyễn Văn Hảo Building

he Nguyễn Văn Hảo Building was built in the 1920s at the junction of today’s Trần Hưng Đạo – Ký Con – Yersin, as a mixed‑use block with offices and apartments above and car‑parts shops below, run by the Comptoir Nguyễn Văn Hảo Saïgonnais.
Its owner, Nguyễn Văn Hảo, was one of Saigon’s leading Vietnamese auto‑spares dealers, and he used the building as both family home and business headquarters, right across from the bustle of Bến Thành Market.

Architecturally, the building is considered one of the finest Art Deco “flatiron” blocks in Saigon, with a narrow wedge‑shaped footprint and crisp geometric lines that stand out among more ornate French colonial buildings.
It shows how some Vietnamese entrepreneurs in the 1920s embraced international modern styles to signal sophistication and progress, not just French officials and foreign companies.

Nguyễn Văn Hảo also funded the nearby Nguyễn Văn Hảo Theatre (now the HCMC Drama Theatre), which in August 1945 hosted a mass public meeting that resolved to launch the August Revolution in the south, linking his name directly to a key moment in Vietnamese history.
So the same family that built a symbol of capitalist modernity also indirectly enabled a space where anti‑colonial politics were organised.

Though many pass the building daily without noticing, Vietnamese heritage writers now highlight it as a rare surviving example of how pre‑war Saigon’s native business elite shaped the colonial city’s skyline, not just the French.
Its upper floors later became ordinary apartments and offices, and the ground‑floor shops changed hands, so the original story faded from public memory until the 2010s.

Today the building remains a quiet piece of architectural history, waiting for passers‑by to look up and notice the Art Deco details that once announced a new, modern Saigon.
For researchers, it is a small but important clue to how Vietnamese capitalists participated in shaping the colonial urban landscape.
